HYDERABAD: As part of its ongoing effort to spread awareness about breast cancer, Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF) & KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases on Sunday held a two-km Pink Ribbon walk in the KBR National Park.

Over 3,000 persons from all walks of life, including breast cancer survivors and their families as well as a huge contingent of students, participated in the campaign. "The breast cancer screening programme by the UBCF, which is being successfully done in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, will be replicated across the country with help from the Centre," said Dr P Raghu Ram, CEO & director, UBCF.

This was UBCF's seventh consecutive year marking the beginning of the international breast cancer awareness month.

The month-long Pink Ribbon campaign, will involve a host of events including breast cancer survivors walking the ramp and a pink ribbon tournament on 14-15 October. The event took off to a flying start on Friday with city's landmark buildings being illuminated in pink.

"More than 60 per cent of breast cancer patients in India present themselves in advanced stages due to lack of awareness and absence of an organised national breast cancer screening programme, but this is set to change now hopefully," Dr Raghu Ram had earlier said.

For the record, 1.5 lakh new breast cancer cases are detected every year in the country with as many as 70,000 persons succumbing to the disease.

A sports tournament organised by Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation to create awareness about the disease saw several young women participate over the weekend.

Called the ‘Pink Ribbon tournament,’ it was organised by the foundation at Oro Sports Village.

The event was inaugurated by the foundation’s P. Raghu Ram in the presence of former Union Minister Pallam Raju.

College students and employees from various corporate companies in Hyderabad were some of the women who participated in the sporting events.
