Dr Raghu Ram is the youngest ever, first & the only Surgeon from Indian subcontinent in the 122 years history of this prestigious Organisation to have been be bestowed with this highest recognition during the Opening Ceremony at the 50th Golden Jubilee World Congress of Surgery being hosted by International Society of Surgery & College of Surgeons of Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Well over 1500 Surgeons from over 30 Countries are participating in this 4 day scientific extravaganza from 26 – 29 August 2024. Founded in 1902, International Society of Surgery is one of the most renowned surgical organizations in the World and its members include distinguished surgeons from all over the world. This high honour has well and truly added fire in my belly to make an even greater impact to further improve breast healthcare in my motherland – Bharat. A world renowned Surgeon, who is also one of the youngest recipients of the prestigious Padma Shri & Dr BC Roy National awards conferred by the Hon'ble President of India in 2015 & 2016 respectively, Dr. Raghu Ram scaled new heights in his surgical career over the past 25 years. He has been bestowed with a string of Honorary Fellowships from several world renowned Surgical Organisations at a young age, which speaks volumes about his distinguished academic track record - Hon. Fellowship from the American Surgical Association (2024), Hon.FRCS from The Royal College of Surgeons of England (2022), Honorary Fellowship from The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (2021), Hon. Fellowship from the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka (2020), Honorary Fellowship from the Chinese College of Surgeons (2020) & Hon. FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand (2019). His love for his motherland and passion for social service are his trademarks and he has achieved at a very young age, what most cannot achieve in a lifetime. He revolutionised breast cancer care in India over the past 17 years through a series of innovative measures. He established South Asia's First comprehensive Breast Health Centre and founded a charitable Foundation to raise awareness of the disease nationwide. He implemented South Asia's largest population-based screening programme in the southern Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh - this programme is currently being rolled out nationwide. He played a pivotal role in forming the Association of Breast Surgeons of India, which is South Asia's first and only Organisation that represents surgeons practicing Breast Surgery in India. Inspired by Hon'ble Prime Minister of India's digital India dream, he developed the World's First breast health mobile phone app in English & 11 commonly spoken Indian languages, making women across the nation more aware about importance of early detection in a country where the subject is considered to be a 'taboo' - so far, it has been downloaded by thousands of people all across India.

Rare Honor to Famous Breast Cancer Doctor Dr Raghuram డా రఘురామ్ కు అరుదైన గౌరవం
The annual "Dr.Ushalakshmi Oration" was established by the Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI) in 2022 to honour Dr Kotha Ushalakshmi’s extraordinary contribution to Breast Cancer advocacy in India. Born in July 1933, Dr. Kotha Ushalakshmi has been one of the most renowned Gynecologists from the Telugu States. She graduated and later obtained her Postgraduate qualifications (DGO & MD) from Guntur Medical College. She worked as Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology in Hyderabad, with the longest innings at Niloufer Hospital. Attention to detail was her trademark. She was one of the most popular & sought after Gynecologists in her time and was well known for her professional excellence and kind hearted nature. Although breast cancer was unwelcome visitor in her life at the age of 69, she fought the disease with extraordinary courage and fierce determination. A brave and gritty breast cancer ‘conqueror’, She resolved to make a meaningful difference to the delivery of Breast cancer care in India. With a vision to empower women about importance of early detection of Breast cancer, which is the commonest cancer affecting women, and equally, establish a population based Breast Cancer Screening Programme, she founded Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, a ‘not for profit Breast cancer Charity in September 2007. Inspired by her strong resolve to make a meaningful difference towards improving breast health care in India, her only son, Dr. Raghu Ram & daughter in law, Dr. Vyjayanthi, left their lucrative career opportunities in the UK and relocated to the Country “lock, stock & barrel” to take care of her and serve their motherland. Over the past 17 years, Dr Raghu Ram has given wings to his mother’s dream by spearheading several unique & pioneering initiatives under the auspices of Ushalakshmi Breast cancer Foundation, which has attracted national and international recognition. She has also been the inspiration behind KIMS–USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases at KIMS Hospitals in Hyderabad, which is south Asia’s first, free purpose built comprehensive Breast health Centre, thus bringing about a revolutionary change in the way ‘Breast Health Centre is understood in the Indian subcontinent. The Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI) - the “Voice” that represents Surgeons practicing Breast Surgery in India have instituted an annual “Dr.Ushalakshmi Oration” to honour her extraordinary contribution to Breast Cancer advocacy in the Country. In 1950s & '60s, arranged marriages was the norm. However, she defied all the rules and created a sensation by falling in love whilst pursuing MBBS and spent a lifetime of 60 years with Prof. P.V. Chalapathi Rao, who was a renowned Surgeon and former President of ASI! ‘Behind every successful man is a woman’ – She was the ‘lucky mascot’ behind her husband, Dr. Chalapathi Rao’s success story as well. ‘The greatest legacy that anyone can leave behind is to positively impact the lives of others.’ Her glorious life well & truly epitomizes this statement. As someone who is generous to a fault, she has always placed the needs of others before her own. She is blessed with a loving family and has two grandchildren, Sai & Krishna, who are pursuing a career in Medicine & Law respectively. At 91, she continues to inspire people around her. All in all, she has been blessed with the greatest fortune of leading a healthy, happy, enriching, productive and contented life.

Dr. Raghu Ram Pillarisetti, Founding Director, KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases @from KIMS Hospitals in Hyderabad & a renowned Surgeon from the Asia Pacific region has achieved the rare distinction to be conferred Honorary Fellowship of the American Surgical Association (ASA) today at Hotel Grand Hyatt in Washington D.C. This is the highest recognition that the ASA can bestow upon a surgical colleague from a foreign country and Dr Raghu Ram is the third surgeon from South Asia to receive this high honour in the 144 years history of America’s oldest and most prestigious Surgical Organisation. Paying rich tributes, Prof. Steven Stain, President of ASA, who personally read out Dr Raghu Ram’s citation to the delegates gathered from all around America and world over said “ Dr. Raghu Ram Pillarisetti has been a leader in revolutionising Breast Cancer Care in India through a series of innovative initiatives. He has dedicated his professional life through his seminal efforts towards education, advocacy & access to state of the art contemporary breast cancer therapy in the Country. In addition, he is an individual of exceptional integrity & professional ethics involved in the restructuring and meritocracy-based direction of Surgical Leadership in India. He is also a strong supporter of building international collaborations and shared educational efforts, including with the ASA and other leading Surgical Societies all over the world. He is a role model, mentor & dedicated tall leader of Surgery in India. He is indeed well qualified and deserving of Honorary Fellowship in the American Surgical Association” Founded in 1880, ASA is America’s oldest and the most prestigious surgical organization. Its members include the nation’s most prominent surgeons from the country's leading academic medical institutions, many of whom are Chairs of the Departments of Surgery at these institutions. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Raghu Ram Pillarisetti said “ I dedicate this high honour from America’s oldest Surgical organisation steeped in history & greatness to my Motherland - Bharat, my family without whom I am a nobody, my patients who have given me the unique privilege to be involved in their care and to my Colleagues for their relentless contribution towards improving the art & science of surgery”
Honorary Fellowship - American Surgical Association
Dr Raghu Ram Pillarisetti, Founding Director of KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases @was KIMS Hospitals in Hyderabad was invited as “Visiting Professor” to the Department of Surgical Oncology at the world renowned MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston. His two day visit on 9 & 10 April 2024 to Houston included exchanges in Operating Room and Multidisciplinary Meetings relating to improving Breast Cancer care. The highlight of his visit was the “Visiting Professor Lecture” on “Disrupting Breast Healthcare in India”, which was transmitted LIVE to all the 13 MD Anderson Cancer Centre Branches all across America. This talk generate a lot of interest & attracted very positive responses from Colleagues at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre. The Lecture highlighted the body of work spearheaded by Dr Pillarisetti over the past 17 years, which has disrupted the delivery of Breast healthcare in India (2007 – 2024) Setting up South Asia's first free standing purpose built Breast Health Centre and introducing Breast health Centre concept in India, where women with both benign breast disease and breast cancer are managed under one roof by specialists with a declared interest in managing breast disease. Landmark innovative breast cancer advocacy initiatives implemented by a 'not for profit' Breast Cancer Charity established in his mother's name (a breast cancer 'conqueror') and the impact it has had in transforming breast cancer form a 'taboo' issue to a much commonly discussed one, paving the path for saving scores of lives. Implementation of south Asia's largest population based breast cancer screening programme spread across 4000 villages reaching out to over 200, 000 underprivileged women in the southern Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This major initiative has served as a benchmark screening programme for the Nation and is currently being rolled out all over India under the auspices of Govt of India’s National Health Mission. The genesis of The Association of Breast Surgeons of India - South Asia's first & the only organisation that represents surgeons practicing the art & science of Breast Surgery and its impact over the past 12 years towards standardising breast healthcare in the Country, which is paving the path to developing Breast Surgery as a distinct subspecialty in India.
